For most vegans, there was a turning point, a moment where everything clicked. From this point, they took the plunge to not take any part in animal cruelty and switch to a plant-based diet. This point for me was watching this video, The hardest part of being vegan:
My partner was already vegan at the time. I heard she was watching something on her phone but at the time I was engrossed in whatever it was I was doing. As she watched, however, I could see her face growing solemn and the lines start to form on her forehead. When it finished, she quietly looked up at me and said “you need to watch this…”
As I watched, the cogs in my brain were turning, and the ignorant life I had been living all this time started to become apparent. I love animals… But you can’t love them, AND eat them. I finished the video and I looked up at my partner…
“I don’t want to eat meat anymore”
It is tough being vegan… You’ve made this great discovery where the changes you’ve made to your diet save thousands of animals and greatly reduces your carbon footprint. It improves your health and wellbeing and fills you with positivity. Yet when you begin to share your discovery with other people, this positivity soon gets knocked out of you…
You find that people aren’t open to your new way of life. They struggle with an addiction to a substance they have lived their whole lives with. Their blind ignorance of the whole subject won’t be shirked because being a vegan has been stigmatised. No matter how hard you try to share your good intentions, you are a vegan… which makes you different.
The great thing about this video is that it re-affirms all your beliefs. It reminds you that being a vegan is not a bad thing and there is a whole community out there just waiting to welcome you with open arms. Amy and I have this video saved to one side when we’ve had a particularly rough day and have been battling against the endless tide of opposing views and it serves as a tremendous boost to morale.
More and more people are starting to see the benefits of becoming vegan. The world needs it, the animals need it and we need it.
If you are a vegan, I hope you enjoy this video as much as we do. That you, like us, keep it saved to one side as a reminder to stay strong. If you are not a vegan… I can’t believe you made it this far! If you felt like this had an impact on you, like it did on me, it’s up to you now to act on it. It’s a hard lifestyle to commit to, but when you weigh the pro’s and con’s… I can tell you it’s worth it.
Do give this a share and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
